Albatros C.IX

line

Albatros C.IX, summer 1917

Second of three build, the serial of this aircraft is unknown. According to information from Bob Pearson, Manfred v. Richthofen used this aircraft for joyriding or visiting other pilots at their airfields in the summer of 1917. The upper wing red/brown and green camouflage scheme is also unknown. According to information taken from the book "Mein Kriegstagebuch" by Manfreds mother Kunigunde, Freifrau von Richthofen, the aircraft was painted all red, but this does not necessarily need to be true. The picture in the book clearly shows that the whole aircraft was overpainted, including the national insigna, which got outlined in white afterwards. Modelers note the color of the tires! WW1 tires was not as black as tires are today due to carbon shortages. Carbon is the stuff used to teint the rubber black.
